Overview

Across the next two weeks, Cultural Services will facilitate and oversee 36 young people from 14 local schools to learn about careers in the creative industries as part of their formal work experience week.

This week, the team are hosting 20 15-year-olds at Cambridge Corn Exchange from 10 local schools where they will learn about venue operation, backstage roles, pathways, and career routes, and meet with full time industry professionals.

The young people will create their own marketing and social media campaigns, design bar promotions, operate lighting and sound desks, fly rigs, programme a season, work a show shift with the Front of House team, as well as take part in sessions with Cambridge Film Festival exploring careers in film and have the opportunity to meet and ask questions to industry artists and West End performers.

Next week, the team will facilitate a further 16 placements for 17-18-year-olds looking at employability skills and leadership in the arts, spending a day with a different cultural partner in the city including Cambridge Arts Theatre, Cambridge Film Festival, Cambridge Corn Exchange, Together Culture, and The Fitzwilliam Museum and Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology.

''The Corn Exchange has this amazing programme that provides access to the arts for students to develop their skills which will be applied in their future lives and careers.'' – Cllr Antoinette Nestor, Cabinet Member for Culture, Economy, and Skills.

‘This has been a really exciting and interesting week, and we’ve learned so much about all the different aspects and careers involved in running a performance venue. I’m looking forward to the rest of the week, especially supporting performers in a show and learning about tech and backstage’ – Year 10 Participant
